ALASKA BASEBALL ALUMNI HALL OF FAME

2022 saw the first class of the AKGPA Hall of Fame inducted during the month of April. The inaugural group were drawn from players, executives, mascots, and personnel directly involved with baseball in Fairbanks, Alaska. Listed below is the first class in its entirety:

THE ’22 TWENTY: Dan Pastorini, Bill Lee, Dave Kingman, Morganna the Kissing Bandit, Tom Seaver, Dave Winfield, Barry Bonds, Mark McGwire, Jason Giambi, Bowie Kuhn, Andy Messersmith, Alvin Davis, Bob Boone, Sean Timmons, Allan Simpson, Bruce Robinson, Rod Dedeaux, H.A. (Red) Boucher, Hap Dumont, and Don Dennis.

2023 will see the induction of a new member into our Ball Hall every day during the month of April until the class is complete on the 20th.

Join us during the month of April for our second countdown of the Alaska Goldpanners Alumni Association Hall of Fame – Class of 2023.


’23 TWENTY HALL OF FAME, DAY 11 INDUCTEE:

BRET BOONE


Bret Robert Boone (born April 6, 1969) is a former Major League Baseball second baseman. During his career Boone was a three-time All-Star, four-time Gold Glove winner, and two-time Silver Slugger Award winner. He is a third generation professional athlete. His brother is Aaron Boone, manager of the New York Yankees.

Mel Allen on ‘This Week in Baseball’:

“Bob Boone once played in the game and this year his son Bret has carried on the tradition.”

(Bret:) “It’s kinda neat actually… and you feel, it’s gonna be twelve o’clock and you feel as if, you know, it’s time to go to bed, but actually, you know, it’s bright out, and you go to the beach. They don’t have a beach here, but .. So, I think it’s really something different and unique.”

“I asked him how in the hell he hit that pitch,” Eddie Guardado said. “And he said, ‘Sometimes Boone hits those pitches.'”

AMATEUR CLIPPINGS:

  • 1988 – Earned distinction of becoming first Goldpanner whose father also played with the team.  

  • 1988 – Batted .330 for Trojans entering NCAA West I Regional with eight home runs and 50 RBIs.  

  • 1988 – Led USC in stolen base percentage (12-for-14). 

  • 1987 – Drafted by Minnesota Twins after graduating from El Dorado High in Placentia, California.

PROFESSIONAL CLIPPINGS:

  • SILVER SLUGGER – 2001, 2003

  • Grandfather Ray, father Bob, and brother Aaron all have played in the Majors

  • 1998 – Became the first third-generation All-Star in baseball history (father Bob and grandfather Ray).

  • 1997 – Set MLB record for 2B with fielding percentage of .997 (2 errors in 607 total chances) … glove was sent to the Hall of Fame in Cooperstown.

  • ’95,’96,’97 – Led league in fielding at second base

  • 1992 – Pacific Coast League All- Star

  • 1990 – Drafted by the Mariners in the fifth round
